Acceptable Level of Sexiness in Malaysia

After having tutorial with lecturer, my lecturer led me into a point 'sexiness and spicy' of AirAsia. Apparently, this can be seen in AirAsia's print ads quite often. In this post, I will discuss about acceptance of sexiness in Malaysia, a Muslim country.

The definition of sexiness:

  • sexually attractive or exciting (Oxford)
  • exciting and interesting (informal) (Oxford)

'Western sexy performances' ... Beyonce has delayed her Malaysian concert over accusations from Islamic conservatives.

The Pan-Malaysian Islamic Party (PAS) has regulation toward the issue of sexiness. Some foreign celebrities meet this conflict due to their sexy dressing in concert.

  1. Beyonce (left) cancelled her concert in 2007 because she didn't want to meet Malaysia's strict dress codes, at last she shifted the performance to Indonesia, a Muslim country with more relaxed rules. PAS worried that it will promote "Western sexy performances" in Malaysia.
  2. In 2009, Rihanna (right) was banned from performing in Malaysia because Malaysia's conservative Islamic party says that her outfits are too sexy.

In Muslim majority city, for instance, authorized party in Kota Bharu setted a rule to restrict Muslim women dressing habitus, Muslim women who expose navels, wear tight outfits, mini-skirts or see-through blouses will be fined up to RM500. Meanwhile, Muslim women are forbidden to wear brightly colored lipstick, tight clothes or high-heel shoes while working. It shows that Kelantan is a conservative state, but it does not represent this rule is implemented in entire Malaysia.

To recapitulate, the acceptance of western women dressing trend is not great due to Muslim majority society in Malaysia. Therefore, this cultural identity becomes a sign, or I should say a baseline for companies to design a print ads, just as AirAsia.
